Mid way through act 1 Joyce Gerber, who was singing Cornelia, suddenly found herself unable to sing. Francis Bible stepped in and sang from the pit for the rest of the performance while Gerber continued to act the role on stage. Rudel made the announcement explaining the situation before the beginning of Act 2.
